It was safe to say that that was not the plot twist everybody was expecting.
“I’m sorry,” Lucifer said with a chuckle, breaking the silence. “You mean to tell me that this man, the man who has controlled us since the beginning, is responsible for wiping out our memories. Is your father?”
“Um,” I began feeling everybody’s eyes switch to me. “I don’t know.” I stopped talking to take a second look at the man I called my father. He was tall with milked down eyes and his hair shared the same dark tone as mine.
Why was he so familiar to me yet so much so a stranger?
“What do you mean you don’t know?” Bal asked, suddenly pulling my arm harshly. “How could you not know? It’s a simple question Charmeine!”
“Bal,” Lucifer said, placing his hand on top of Bal’s in warning, “if she says she doesn’t know. She doesn’t know. Anything before November seventeenth is blank for her.”
“So?” Bal asked, pulling his arm away. “You don’t remember anything before that date; you’re turning out fine!”
“I wouldn’t know what my parents looked like Bal if you asked me.”
Bal fell silent and muttered an apology over to me.
I could tell he was hurt and yet I couldn’t do anything about it. I was just as clueless as they were.
The man now known as my father was watching us with curiosity. “Sure yes!” he announced, lessening the gap between us. “Charmeine is my daughter. She doesn’t remember me because I tampered with her memories. Now that that is has been cleared up.” He clapped his hands together, brushing things up rather neatly underneath the carpet.
“However,” he spoke again, not leaving any time for us to process anything, “despite what dear Gailé here has promised, I cannot allow Charmeine to continue breathing.”
“What?”
“She’s growing too strong. I cannot allow her to overtake us.”
“Father, I’m not trying to overtake anybody! I want the truth! That’s all.”
“Charmeine,” Father cut me off, “I know what is best for you okay? So, work with us here and allow yourself to be killed.”
Words caught in my throat, but I didn’t have the willpower to say anything. I wasn’t wanted. I wasn’t needed anymore; that was what Father was trying to say.
I was nothing more than a puppet without arms to them now.
“Charmeine.” It was Tiel who took my arm now; she rubbed soothing circles into my skin. “Don’t listen to him. He doesn’t know what is best for you, okay?”
“I don’t want to die Father,” I murmured, not able to look at anyone in the eye.
“No one does my sweet. However, it is a sacrifice that needs to take place.”
“Why are you suddenly so set on Charmeine dying?” It was Aggy’s turn to speak. As she did, she wrapped an arm around my waist. “You’re hiding something, aren’t you? What piece of the puzzle have you left out?”
The man’s eyes widened though his neutral expression didn’t falter. “I’m not hiding anything.”
Asmodeus chuckled. “I call bullshit on that.”
Father ignored him, “I don’t have to explain myself to you young man,” he said, looking me directly in the eye.
